Catfishing, Hoarding and Cruel Intentions: Modern Relationships
I wrote this yesterday and switched to writing the previous post which was a bit more angst based. Here are my original thoughts about relationships after hearing of the Te'o scandal...
Couple things you should know about me:
1. I am a man hoarder. I hoard relationships with men. Nope, I don't have guys locked in my basement. No, I am not dating ANY of them, but I do have an on-going non-relationship saga with more men than I have fingers on the home keys. And I love it. I never have to go far to get a guys opinion, company for a drink, a date for a wedding and most of them know me well enough to be blunt and honest.
2. I have been "catfished" or as I now like to call it, "Te'o-ed". I developed an interesting situation with a man and he hid a secret from me. I found out about and and I remained his friend. I didn't date him, I don't consider it a relationship, I would never claim it to be...and that is all you need to know. I now however have someone (my own private investigator if you will) run a background check on almost every man I meet...doesn't matter how I meet them, if they are a friend of a friend, a guy at a bar or blind date...background check.
3. Relationships: Sometimes they're just emotional. Sometimes they're just passionate. And in that once in a blue moon chance, sometimes they're both. You don't always need both to make it successful.
4. I will find a flaw in you. I will hold on to that flaw like it's the last life preserver on the Titanic. I will cling to that flaw, I will make it your defining trait, I will never tell you, it will end whatever we had going unless you change it of your own free will.
5. I don't trust well, I don't trust often, and I definitely don't trust your intentions. However, trust that I will keep you at bay with witty banter and an ass of an attitude. I'm fluent in 3 languages, English, Sarcasm and Profanity (stolen from twitter) and all 3 I use to my advantage.
6. I'm primarily a good person and if you're not good people, I know it from the start.
Don't be fooled by shiny things my darlings, usually all they do is show a reflection of you... You never actually see who is behind the pretty piece.
